Types of Boundaries
Types of boundaries vary according to the relationship. With mother-daughter relationships, weâre going to stick to the basics: physical, intellectual, emotional, financial, and time. Everyone has conflicts around some of these areas and boundaries can make the difference between having a relationship and losing one.
Physical boundaries relate to your body and personal space, which may include your home. Too much touching or hugging may make you uncomfortable and anxious. Leslie remembers her mom forcing her to kiss and hug distant relations she didnât know. Ugh. Too much advice may set you on edge. Donât eat this. Donât eat that. Your body is yours. Itâs important to take care of your body, but only you are in control of what you want and what you should do. These days there is a lot of controversy around gender identity, reproductive rights, and tattooing and piercing among others. Who owns your body and should decide what you do with it? These are physical boundaries issues, and they may be something you need to work out with professional help.
Control over addiction is another area where boundaries should exist. For example, itâs okay to have a nonnegotiable boundary around not drinking or using in your home. Also, if youâre a mom with a teen daughter, you canât physically stop her from having sex or drinking, but you can set a boundary about it occurring on your watch in your home. As long as someone is in your home, you can say no to things they do that make you uncomfortable or frightened.
Boundaries around eating are useful when interference around eating causes anxiety and stress. Thatâs one reason people binge and purge and snack in secret. Is someone watching your every mouthful? Is someone always telling you what and when to eat?
